Many fawns in our region are born in May and June, but by July, they are active enough to start traveling alongside their mothers. Since they are still very young and highly unpredictable, they frequently lag behind or suddenly dart into the road. This makes July a notorious "secondary peak" for deer-vehicle crashes. Staying alert and knowing how to react can prevent a serious crash and ensure a safe commute.

Quick Tips for Driving Safely This Season:

• Where there’s one, expect more: Deer rarely travel alone. If one crosses the road, expect more to follow. 

• Scan the shoulders: Keep your eyes moving along roadsides and ditches, especially near woods, farm fields and water.

• Know peak hours: Deer are most active at dawn and dusk. Reduce speeds and stay alert during these lower-visibility hours.

• Do not swerve: If a collision is unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in the lane. Swerving can lead to a more dangerous crash.

• Use high beams: When oncoming traffic is clear, use high beams to illuminate ditches and catch the reflection of deer eyes early.
